Bhutan still has 72
percent of forest coverage, which
contains almost all the biodiversity.
Twenty-two percent of the country’s
total land area has been set aside for
national parks, nature reserves,
wildlife sanctuaries, and conservation
areas. These protected areas host
hundreds of domestic and international
bird species. Bhutan has been named as
one of the 10 global biodiversity
hotspots.
Bhutan abounds in many rare plant and
animal species. The golden languor is
one of those species of long-tailed
monkey found in Bhutan only. Of 616
species of birds, 464 species are found
in Bhutan and 14 of them have been
identified as globally threatened by
Bird Life International.
